Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor in the United States.
She was born in England in 1821 and the Blackwell family moved to the United States.She grew up and taught at a school for several years.
In 1844 she made up her mind to be a doctor, but none of school would let her in. After few years, a small school for doctors in New York invited her to study there.
Most of the teachers and students thought she would leave school before she became a doctor, because people thought a woman was not strong enough to work as a doctor. But she did not lose heart and at last she succeeded.
She could not get a job in the US so she went to London to get a job and study. When she came back to the US some years later, she still could not get a job. Finary she opened her own hospital in New York City which employed only woman, and took care of poor women and children.
